A Message to all at Blagdon from Matt Ridley.

Anya and I know this is a really difficult time for many of you, whether you are in ill health, lonely, trying to keep educating your children or worried about loss of work or business.

We are very grateful to you for following the government's advice to stay at home and keep your distance. This is not just for your own good but because any one of us could become an unwitting carrier of the virus and give it to somebody who might then die.

Our first concern is for anybody who experiences severe ill health, and please let us know if there is something we or anybody else can do to help, though the first call should be to 111 or 999, of course. And do try to keep an eye out to check that your neighbours are all right.

Please contact the estate office by phone if you are concerned about something. The team is fielding calls from home. We may not be able to help but we will certainly try. Do excuse us if we are not able to do everything, but some of the estate staff are now working from home and some things may not be possible. We are deliberately cutting back on non-essential repairs and improvements, but will do our best to respond to any emergency.

Rest assured that we are not going to let anybody get into serious financial trouble and there is now help available from the government for most people.

Meanwhile do please make any suggestions for how we can all help each other get through this and cheer each other up.

And when you get out of the house for your one bit of exercise during the day do please enjoy the grounds around the hall and the footpaths all over the estate while keeping your distance from each other. We are lucky in one respect - that we live in such a lovely place and the daffodils don't pick themselves!

    All best wishes
