Welcome to the June edition of the Blagdon Bull newsletter.

June 2019 marks the end of my second year at Blagdon.  However, it seems I am by no means a long serving member of staff by Blagdon's standards judging by the service dates on the photographs of former staff, displayed in this office!

On a personal note, despite the past two years having whizzed by far too quickly - I am very pleased to have met most of you and to now be an integral part of the estate.  What a great place Blagdon is.

 

Spring into summer:

So far, we have been blessed with some beautiful spring days and some very nice, long bank holiday weekends.

Our first open garden event took place on 14th of April, in aid of the Red Cross. It was a bitterley cold day, but the event was well supported by Blagdon tenants, residents and volunteers.  Over 300 people visited the grounds, refreshment areas, stalls and health trainers. The army climbing wall, falconry display and the Black Candle Company of Northumberland were also great, new additions to the day.

Thank you to everyone that supported the Red Cross open day - £2552 was raised for the Red Cross.

 

Easter Trail Event update:

Blagdon's newly formed Social Committee, "THE BSC" hosted their very first event at the estate on Good Friday.  After weeks in the planning, the new committee did a fantastic job (with the support of helpers on the day), hosting the Easter trail, competitions and activites.  Blagdon's very own, new Easter bunny appeared and the event was very much enjoyed by the children and everyone that attended.

It is hoped that Blagdon's community will continue to support the new committee, to host such brilliant events for children and adults to enjoy on the estate.

A very big thank you to the new committee, the Blagdon Bunny and to the helpers for doing such a great job for their first event. Well done!

Wooden Spoon Charity walk:

Michael and Jeannie Dungait organised a charity walk at Blagdon on Sunday 12th May.  The sun shone and 75 walkers attended.  Over £1,000 was raised for the charity.

 

Scoliosis Charity Walk Update:

With the kind permission of Lord & Lady Ridley, Jill Tindale and her daughter, Alice held a charity walk at Blagdon on the 25th May 2019.  50 walkers took part in the event which was a great success.  Jill and Alice would like to pass on their appreciation to everyone for their input and for attending the walk.  They could not have asked for a better day and raised £1,000, which will go directly to the Scoliosis UK charity.

 

Take a chance on me!

The Stannington church have been very busy organising another concert in the beautiful Walled Garden at Blagdon.  Tickets are priced at £20 per adult and £5 for children and the event is due to take place on the 15th of June. Please contact Jeannie (Tel: 789045) for tickets. Proceeds go towards St Marys Church funds.

A reminder to those attending the concert, access should be through the Home Farm entrance and taxis should also use this entrance only.  There will be no access through North Lodge or the South Lodge.

 

 

Macmillan, Open Garden Event, Sunday 1st September 2019 (Organisers, Bob & Lyn Downer):

On the 1st of September, Blagdon residents are hosting an open garden event for Macmillan.  This event is being organised in memory of Harry who sadly passed away in September 2018.  Harry had led a fit and healthy lifestyle, but became unwell in 2018 whilst visiting relations in the UK, from Australia.  He was diagnosed with a large, inoperable brain tumor and was unable to travel home due to being so unwell and being given just weeks to live.  Despite Harry not being a UK resident, Macmillan stepped in and provided first class care and support for Harry and his wife at Blagdon.

Macmillan are no strangers to Blagdon and have helped to care for many residents over the years.  Macmillan are not part of the NHS but are a charity who depend on donations to allow them to offer this critical care for people.  The open day is to thank the Macmillan carers and try to raise money to go towards the charity.

If you have never been to Blagdon before, please mark the 1st of September in your diary, to come along to the event and give your support.  This will allow us to help others, to let Harry to continue to help people as he did throughout his life.

Blagdon's gates will open at 12 noon, until 4.30pm for this event.  Refreshments will be on sale.  Harry's wife, Kay is returning to the UK specifically to attend this event and we all look forward to seeing you there.

 

North Lodge Gates:

The North Lodge Gates are remaining open until 10pm during the cricket season but will be closed from 10pm until 7am, seven days a week.

 

Cricket Season:

The cricket season runs until September time and there is a game every Saturday at Blagdon.  Tenants can spectate at home games, so why not take a wander up to the cricket field, to watch the games.

 

Office opening hours/Emergency contacts:

The Blagdon estate office is open Monday-Friday, 9am until 5pm for any enquiries, reports of repairs, estate type issues.  The office number is: 01670 789621.

In an emergency please contact:

Gas Emergencies

If you smell gas telephone: 0800 111 999. Turn off the gas immediately at the meter, contact emergency gas service to ask them to attend.

Electricity

If you suffer a power cut telephone: 105 (free).  This is the national emergency number and they will put you through to your local electricity network operator.

Matthew Williamson, the managing Agent lives on Blagdon and is available for all other estate emergencies, out of hours.  His mobile tel is: 07824 437940.  Matthew will assess whether or not to call contractors out on a case by case basis.

 

Blagdon Rent Dates:

Rent is payable, in advance on the following dates:

2nd February

12th May

15th August

11th November

Therefore, rent should be paid on or before the quarter day regardless whether or not you have received the invoice from the Estate office. The office cannot accept cash payment for rent and if you do have issues, or difficulties paying your rent on time, please contact this office in confidence.

 

Calor Gas Rates:

Blagdon has negotiated a new rate for Blagdon tenants with effect from the 1st of June 2019.  The new rate is: 30.50p per litre.  Customers should inform Calor they are Blagdon tenants when applying for the discounted rate which is valid for the next 12 months.

 

Open Garden - In aid of Hospice Care:

Sunday 2nd June 2019. 1pm-5pm.

Entry £5, children free

Dogs on leads, Classic cars, teas, live music, craft stalls and the North East kite display.

Country Trust visits:

Blagdon hosts a number of school visits through the Country Trust and relies upon our staff and volunteers to make the days run so smoothly.  Our ongoing appreciation goes to Michael and Shaun from Woods section, helpers Bob Downer and Linda Gray for their continued support.

The next school visit is scheduled to take place at Blagdon on the 13th of June 2019.

 

Happy Birthday Shaun:

Shaun Hartley has recently celebrated a special birthday and on behalf of us all, we wish Shaun a very Happy 50th year!

 

Anthony, the Plasterer:

On the 30th of April 2019, Anthony, the Plasterer left the estate.  We wish Anthony and his family good luck for the future and look forward to seeing them again soon.

 

Reminder:

The White Bridge remains closed.  Scaffolding has been put in place to have the bridge surveyed ahead of repairing it.


 

Energy Performance Assessor:

Allison Jones from Green Light Surveys has been visiting some of you to carry out assesments.  Thank you for allowing her access to your homes and if anyone has had contact from her but has not managed to return her call, please contact her on mobile: 07961 391254 to arrange a time for her to come and do the assessment. This only applies to certain properties and where Allison has already been in touch with you.

 

External Paint Program:

Robert Mckenzie is carrying out painting work with his men on the estate.  This applies to properties which are due to be painted as part of the 5 yearly paint program. If you are one of those properties please could we ask that your clear anything adjacent to the areas to be painted e.g. pots, woodpiles and anything that may be an obstruction.  Creeping plants, weeds overhanging gutters can also, often be an issue for the painters.

 

 

The Old Blagdonians Coffee Morning:

The next coffee morning is due to take place on Tuesday 18th June between 10.30am & 12.30pm in the Clockroom. Donations for the Scoliosis Association.

 

Clockroom Visitors:

Visitors to the Clockroom are kindly asked to park in the wooded area car park, behind the office. Parking in the Courtyard is for disabled visitors access only. If you are visiting the clockroom at night, please could we all be mindful there are tenants that reside in the vicinity and keep any noise to a minimum.

 

Hot/Cold Food Delivery:

At the Estate office we are contemplating whether or not to have a hot/cold food delivery service a couple of times a week. If any tenants (residential or commercial) would be interested in such a service, or knows anyone that would like to offer hot and cold food e.g. sandwiches etc. for sale and deliver them to the office twice a week, please email details to: Claire@blagdonestate.co.uk

 

Residential & Commercial lettings:

We welcome the new residential and commercial tenants to Blagdon. We wish them all the very best in their new properties.

New applicants for properties can apply through the estate website "lettings" section to be added to the waiting list or contact the office on tel: 01670 789621 to register your details.

 

Gardens:

One of the many great things about being at Blagdon is being surrounded by such beautiful grounds.  I have also noticed during my walks and runs (at a slow pace!) around the estate how well tended and lovely some of your gardens are too.  Clearly, there is an awful lot of work and effort goes into looking after your gardens, so keep up all of your good work.

 

Managing Agents - update:

Some of you may already be aware that LandFactor, the agents for Blagdon merged with Galbraith on the 1st of April 2019.  Galbraith will continue to serve Blagdon and existing clients.

Security & Cameras:

Blagdon Estate is private and access is "by appointment only".  The Estate has CCTV operating which was recently upgraded.  We have Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and if you would like to have your car registration details added to our system, inform Jill in our reception.

 

Rural Policing Meeting:

DC Mayland from the Northumbria Police, Signal Crime Team met recently with some of our shooting and farming community.  He discussed issues, trends and gave advice on Crime Prevention and how we can work together with the Police.  If you would like to share any relevant information with DC Mayland, please contact this office and we can pass any information to him.  In a police emergency, call 999.

 

Dog Walkers:

The walled garden is very popular with dog walkers and unfortunately there has been an increase in dog mess within the garden. Signage has been put in place and we request that you please clean up after your dog particularly as the grass cutting season is upon us.

 

Livestock Worrying Reminder:

Instances of dogs worrying livestock, especially sheep and lambs occurs more often than people might think.

Please be aware of the following advice from Farmwatch:

Always keep dogs on leads  when walking them in rural areas where livestock are kept.

Be aware that even small lap dogs can attack farm animals.

Report attacks by dogs and sightings of roaming in the countryside to local farmers or the police.

Familiarise puppies with farm livestock from a young age to reduce the risk of them attacking sheep or cattle as adult dogs.

Don't let dogs loose in gardens adjoining livestock fields - many attacks are caused by dogs that escape and worry sheep grazing nearby.


 

Tree felling and timber operations are ongoing on the this estate.  Please take care whilst you are out and about and observe the signs.
